What is a design engineer?
A design engineer is a designer who codes. They design interfaces and build them in production front-end code: components and design systems, interactions and motion, prototypes that run, and more and more often the interfaces of AI products. In software, that is what the title means; it is not the mechanical engineer who designs machines and parts.

What a design engineer does
Designs and builds the interface itself, so what ships matches the design, down to spacing, motion and every state.
Builds the design system in code, tokens, components and their documentation, shared by designers and engineers.
Prototypes in code, to test an idea with real data, real speed and real devices before a team commits to it.
Crafts interaction and motion, the details that are hard to hand over in a static file.
Builds the interfaces of AI products, streaming answers, chat and agent interfaces, and the states for output that can be wrong.
Works between design and engineering, and can sit in either team.
Design engineer, UX engineer, design technologist
The titles overlap, and companies use them differently. Usually:
- Design engineer
- A designer who ships production interface code: design and engineering in one person.
- UX engineer
- Often the same job under another name. Google, for one, uses this title for engineers who build and prototype with design teams.
- Design technologist
- Explores and prototypes new technology for design teams; ships production code less often.
- Creative technologist
- Builds interactive and experimental work, often for marketing, brand or physical spaces.
- Front-end developer
- Builds production interfaces from other people's designs; designing them is not usually part of the job.
Skills to look for
- Interface and interaction design, in Figma or straight in code
- HTML, CSS and TypeScript, with React or a similar framework
- Design systems: tokens, components, documentation
- Animation and motion (CSS, GSAP, Lottie, Rive)
- Accessibility and performance
- Prototyping, including with AI tools such as Cursor and Copilot
- Building with AI models: streaming, chat and agent interfaces
- Working with both designers and engineers, and speaking both languages
How to hire one
- Decide the shape of the role: more design or more engineering, product interface or design system, freelance or full-time.
- Look at shipped work, not just files: live products, code and prototypes, with the design thinking behind them.
- Test the way they work: a small design-and-build exercise, or pairing on a real component.
- Put a designer and an engineer on the interview loop, so both halves of the job are judged.

Both. A design engineer designs the interface and writes the production code for it. Most come from design and learned to code, or from front-end engineering with a strong eye for design.
A front-end developer builds interfaces from designs someone else made. A design engineer designs them too, and often owns the details a hand-off loses: interaction, motion and the design system.
The two overlap. Building by prompting AI tools, or vibe coding, is one way design engineers work now, but a design engineer also knows the code underneath and ships it to production.
